Letter from MRTA President — Walter Cochran, MRTA President, recently sent a letter addressed to all teachers, active or retired, about the recently ended 2010 legislative session. He thanked several key players who stood up and were vocal about some undesireable piecies of legislation before the Missouri General Assembly. Walter's complete letter can be read here so you also know who to thank for the success MRTA had in preventing the retirement board changes from passing this session.

Update on SS SB714 — Seven of us from BCU were able to attend the hearing in Jeff City on May 4: Joy Underdown, Marilyn Skipper, Don Meyer, Ron Schlimme, Louise Stanley, Pat Powell, and Mary Ridge. It was an interesting day. We were packed into the hearing room with some spilling over into the hallways. Two state newspapers gave an account of the hearing. You can read the Columbia Daily Tribune article here and the St. Louis Post Dispatch article here.The pension bill is now SS HB2357 as it was amended to include all of SB 714 with the state investment board language.

Contact Sen. McCaskill regarding WEP/GPO — Several attempts have been made by Jim Kreider asking Sen. McCaskill to co-sponsor legislation to repeal WEP/GPO, but she has not responded so far. All members are asked to contact Sen. McCaskill about this important issue. You can read our Executive Director's letter here.

Rep. Blunt and Sen. Bond respond regarding WEP/GPO — Representative Roy Blunt (MO, 7th Dist.) and Senator Kit Bond have both sent replies to Jim Krieder, MRTA Executive Director, about their positions on the WEP/GPO. You may read those letters here. All members should continue contacting their congressmen and senators about this important issue.
